Discover the Credit Union Advantage!

In a credit union, the members are the owners. Most of the profits are returned to the members in the form of higher savings rates, lower loan rates, or services at low or no fees. Anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Sussex County or the City of Milford in Delaware is eligible to belong to our credit union. Immediate family members of current members are also eligible to join. Check the information on this web site or call our office for details.

What Makes Us Different?

A credit union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative. It is comprised of members who share a common bond, known as their field of membership. Members pool their savings and make loans to each other at fair interest rates. Every saver is a member and every member is an owner, with the right to vote at the annual meeting. Since there is no outside group of stockholders or directors, most of the profits are returned to the members in the form of higher dividends on shares (savings) and/or lower interest rates on loans.

Members own the Credit Union! Most of the profit goes back to the members! Your money earns interest from the day that you give it to us. We deposit the interest you earn to your account monthly. Your accounts are federally insured to at least $250,000 by the NCUSIF.

How We Are Managed

Our credit union is chartered by the Federal Government and organized and managed under rules and regulations of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a branch of the Federal Government. Complying with these directives, we have a nine person Board of Directors elected by the members, who are responsible to see that we operate in accordance with the NCUA rules and regulations, federal compliance regulations and our own bylaws that can be reviewed in our office at any time. The Board meets once a month to review the operating results and approve the payment of dividends. Three Board members are elected for three year terms every year at the annual meeting held in May with each credit union member having one vote.

The Board delegates the ongoing operation of the credit union to a Chief Executive Officer, the Operations Manager and the staff that they have hired to provide the services approved by the Board.

In addition, there is a Supervisory Committee appointed by the Board that is responsible for insuring that the credit union is operating in accordance with accepted financial practices. Under their guidance, we have a CPA audit every year and an NCUA examination on a frequency determined by NCUA.

Our History

SFCU was founded in 1970 by the parishioners of St. Lukes Church to help the below-average wage earner. Since its inception, the credit union has retained its original mission of helping the less affluent along with many others in the community. We are a full-service financial cooperative which continues to add services and products to benefit our members. Our goal is to become the primary financial institution of each and every member.

Our Vision Statement

"To improve the quality of life of our members by providing high quality products and services in a friendly, timely and professional manner."
